EDB update: Months 6 and 7!

Oh no! We missed our 6-month update! I blame the government shutdown, which is a handy scapegoat for just about everything lately.

UntitledVital Statistics: At your 6-month checkup, you weighed 22 pounds 12 ounces, and measured in at 27.5 inches. That’s 99th percentile for weight, as usual, and around 75th percentile for height. You are the size of an average 16-month-old, which is excellent! Such a healthy guy! Now that you are 7 months old, we’re guessing you’re closer to 24 pounds. The fact that we’re buying you 18-month clothing is a little crazy, but we wouldn’t have you any other way.

Developmental Milestones: You are racing through these like a champ. You are now such a reliable sitter that we can trust that you’re good on your own on the floor (as long as you’re surrounded by mostly soft things). You’re rolling on to your stomach constantly, and you can usually get back on to your back if you really apply yourself (which is a change from last month, when you’d work yourself into a lather trying to get off your tummy and then cry for someone to come flip you!). You aren’t crawling or even scooting exactly, but you do somehow manage to get yourself from one end of the crib to the other, or a good few feet on the floor, when your parents aren’t looking.

Your vocalizing has also come a long way! You love repeating lots of syllables–ba, gah, dah, dih, sometimes even a ma– and your belly laughs and squeals are absolutely delightful. I know we say it often, but this might be the best age ever.

Eating: We have begun the solid food experience! But we’re taking it slow. We decided to try something called Baby-Led Solids, so instead of starting you with mushy rice cereal, we’ve been mostly giving you chunks of soft veggies to gum and taste at your own speed. You’re still pretty unsure about the whole thing, but every day you seem to ingest a bit more. We’ve tried sweet potato, carrots, broccoli, banana, acorn squash, and peas. So far broccoli and banana seem to be the favorites! You also love drinking water out of your sippy cup with the straw; you got the hang of it right away to the amazement of your parents. (Also a high-five that we had six months of exclusive breastfeeding! What a great team.)

Sleeping: Sleeping was rough, but it’s getting better! We’ve finally got you to a place where you will sleep from about 8pm to 1:30am. After that you are still waking about every 2 hours to eat, but that first stretch of sleep is excellent for everyone involved. Lately you’ve started skipping your last nap of the day at daycare, so we think  you’re beginning to transition from 3 naps to 2! Growing up so fast.

Likes: Putting things in your mouth, listening to your dad make funny noises, riding in your stroller, playing in your exersaucer, sitting up like a big boy, splashing in the tub, drinking out of your sippy cup

Untitled

Dislikes: Getting stranded on your tummy, wind in your face, having a stuffy nose

New Friends: In October you got to meet Uncle Bob, who came out from Iowa for a conference. We even got to turn lemons into lemonade when the government shutdown meant that Bob’s second day of meetings we cancelled, so we got to spend even more time with him! During the furlough you also got to hang out with Bryn and Issy, who came down from New York and went with us to get pumpkins and donuts (and banana ice cream), and Grammy, who met us at the mall for some furlough window shopping. You also met our friends Deb and Darren, who came to visit from Kansas City and were so excited to meet you! And you had lots of fun adventures with Aunt Katie, as always. Just you wait: with the holidays around the corner, there’ll be even more relatives to have fun with! (Photos of EDB and friends)

Adventures: You’ve been to so many festivals! We hit up the H Street Festival, the Barracks Row Festival, the National Book Festival, and an Apple Festival. There was also yet ANOTHER trip to the zoo (you’re finally starting to notice the animals!), a whirl around the Hirshhorn, and a trip out to a Maryland farm to pick out pumpkins. In more domestic (but no less exciting!) adventures, you had your first ride in a shopping cart, a playdate with your buddies Gavin and Miles, and a Fall Party at daycare.    (Photos of EDB’s Adventures)
